Easy Soda Bread

- 1.
Set a rack in the middle of your oven and preheat to 450°F.
- 2.
In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt until fully incorporated.
- 3.
Form a well in the center of the flour mixture and fill it with the buttermilk.
- 4.
Use a fork to gradually incorporate the flour into the buttermilk until a thick batter forms.
- 5.
Use your hands to gently shape the batter into a dough, incorporating any remaining flour. Do not overwork the dough.
- 6.
Transfer the dough to a floured work surface and shape it into a round, approximately 6 inches in diameter and about 1.5 inches thick.
- 7.
Place the shaped dough in a Dutch oven or cast iron skillet.
- 8.
Use a sharp knife to cut a large 'X' into the top of the dough.
- 9.
Bake for 10 minutes at 450°F, then lower the oven temperature to 400°F and continue baking for an additional 20 minutes until the bread is golden brown and crusty on the outside.
- 10.
Transfer to a rack to cool before serving.

Notes
- Can make 8 slices.
- Experiment by adding currants, caraway seeds, citrus zest, or fresh herbs.
- For variations, consider using whole wheat flour, but adjust moisture as needed.
